Wintervacht is putting the “blanket” in “blanket coat.” Founded by Yoni van Oorsouw and Manon van Hoeckel, two friends who met in design school, the Amsterdam-based label transforms unwanted blankets from all across the Netherlands into swaddle-worthy jackets. Wintervacht, which means “winter fur” in Dutch, owes a debt of gratitude to van Oorsouw’s mother—and van Hoeckel’s lack of heat during her student days. Manon lived in a house without any heating so she had three old woolen blankets on top of her bed. When Yoni’s Mom suggested making a coat for her she thought to make one out of the woolen blankets. Before they knew it, van Oorsouw and van Hoeckel were spending every spare moment sewing coats for friends and friends of friends. A lightbulb went off, and a business was born.
